Getting Started
What is Atumpan?
Atumpan is a messenger for private chats, voice notes, and voice and video calls, with groups, photos and files. It's made by Nkonso, the makers of Agoo, and named after the talking drums that carried messages from village to village.
How do I get it?
Atumpan opens to people on its early-access list first. Join on the Get Atumpan page with your email, the @username you want and the phone you use, and we'll send your invitation when your place comes up.
Which phones does it work on?
iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets (including entry-level ones), and the web in any modern browser.
Do I need to give out my phone number?
No. Your number is hidden by default. People start a chat with your @username, your QR code or your atumpan.com link. You can switch on 'Find me by phone number' if you want old contacts to find you.
Privacy and Security
Is Atumpan end-to-end encrypted?
Personal and group chats between adults, and their calls, are end-to-end encrypted with MLS, the open standard. Chats with businesses, inside an organisation's Agoo Workspace, and with anyone under 18 are encrypted on the way and where they're stored, and carry a teal shield instead of the amber lock, so you always know which is which.
Can Atumpan read my messages?
Not in end-to-end encrypted chats. The keys live on your devices. In business, team and under-18 chats, the business, the organisation or our safety checks can see messages, and the chat says so.
What happens when I report someone?
Your report carries a verifiable copy of the messages you report (message franking), so our safety team can act on it. Nobody can read your other messages.
What if I lose my phone?
Turn on encrypted backup and keep your recovery key safe. With it, a new phone gets your chats back. We can't open your backup without it.
Using Atumpan
Does Atumpan work on a weak network?
Yes. Messages wait on your phone and send in order when the signal returns. Calls drop the video before they drop the call, and a data saver keeps media small on mobile data.
What do the drum receipts mean?
One dashed drum head: sending. One drum: sent. Two drums: delivered. Both lit amber: read. You can turn read receipts off, and then they're hidden both ways.
Is Atumpan the same account as Amee and Agoo?
Yes. Atumpan, Amee and Agoo share one Agoo ID, and Atumpan and Amee share one @username, so you only claim it once.
Can my business use Atumpan?
Yes. Businesses answer Atumpan chats from their Agoo inbox as a team, and their Agoo Reviews score shows in the chat. Organisations on Agoo Workspace get team chat on the same engine.
